Insurance Risk Reduction Tips for the COVID-19 Pandemic

What a time we are living in right now.   Most of us thought we would never live through an experience like the current pandemic.  I suspect everyone’s thoughts are of keeping themselves and their loved ones safe.  Of course, the best way to do so is social distancing.  In the world of insurance, we recognize that clients want to avoid having to bring in adjusters, contractors and clean up crews to our business or homes at the best of times. With social distancing this becomes even more prevalent.

Assessing risk in your business toolSGI Canada has some helpful tips for business owners on how to help keep business premises safe during these unprecedented times.  They start by offering the following: “During the COVID-19 pandemic, non-essential businesses in Canada have been forced to shut down temporarily. This shutdown can lead to a higher risk of theft, vandalism, trespassing and damage from cold weather or spring rainstorms.

We recommend that business owners, property owners and landlords do a risk assessment on their properties and put a plan in place to keep the property in good shape. It’s also important to do regular visits and visual checks when possible to spot potential problems and flag dangerous situations before they get worse.”

Personal Property Risk Reduction

For homeowners, one of the more common home claims we see this time of year is spring flooding.  Wawanesa has offered up some helpful hints to keep your home safe from spring flooding.  They cite in the article below that “Basement flooding is already on the rise all across Canada, resulting in billions of dollars of losses, according to a report by the Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo. The University indicates that climate changes leading to intense rainfalls, combined with aging infrastructure and growing urban areas (among other factors), give even more reason for homeowners to put flood protection measures in place.

In fact, their findings reveal that 1.7 million Canadian households are exposed to some sort of flooding risk. That’s about one-fifth of the population, with an average price tag of $43,000 per flooded basement.”
